The number of tourists in Portugal jumped by almost 12% in June compared with last year, which could herald another record year for Portugal, whose tourism sector accounts for around 10% of its gross domestic product (GDP).
While security fears are turning tourists away from Turkey and North African countries, Portugal has been welcoming more and more of them every year since 2011, helping it to emerge from the crisis.
The national statistics institute announced on Tuesday that 1.18 million foreigners stayed in hotels in Portugal in June.
Since the start of the year, their number has exceeded five million, 13% more than over the same period in 2015.
Hotel sector sales in Portugal rose by almost 17% in the first half, to 1.16 billion euros.
The number of foreign tourists to Portugal surpassed the 10 million mark for the first time last year, with an increase of around 10% on 2014.
