What you need to know when you want to retire abroad

<p class&equals;"p1"><span class&equals;"s1"><b>More and more French retirees are going abroad&amp;period; Anne Dayraut&amp;comma; journalist for the private individual&amp;comma; gives her advice on Europe 1&amp;period;<&sol;b><&sol;span><&sol;p>&amp;NewLine;<p class&equals;"p1"><span class&equals;"s1">Spend your retirement abroad&amp;&amp;num;8230&amp;semi; the idea is appealing to more and more seniors&amp;period; <span class&equals;"s2">According to a 2014 report from the French retirement insurance<&sol;span>9&amp;comma;1&amp;percnt; of retirees&amp;comma; i.e. 1&amp;comma;25 million people&amp;comma; live abroad or in a TOM&amp;period; "The more comfortable standard of living&amp;comma; the sun and financial reasons including the desire to&amp;rsquo&amp;semi;escape taxation" are the main sources of motivation&amp;comma; notes Anne Dayraut&amp;comma; journalist with the newspaper <i>The private individual<&sol;i> and guest on Europe 1 on Thursday&amp;period; But like any departure&amp;comma; that of retired expatriates must be prepared&amp;period;<&sol;span><&sol;p>&amp;NewLine;<p class&equals;"p1"><span class&equals;"s1"><b>- Include all ancillary costs&amp;period;<&sol;b> The financial gain is real when retirees decide to go abroad&amp;period; But certain ancillary costs are sometimes overlooked&amp;colon; "In particular, we forget the need to return to France&amp;comma; the round trips by plane"&amp;comma; notes Anne Dayraut&amp;period; "We're very young when we're retired&amp;comma; but we're going to grow old and have health problems&amp;comma; so we have to take a lot of precautions&amp;comma; think about our estate before we leave&amp;period;". <&sol;span><&sol;p>&amp;NewLine;<p class&equals;"p1"><span class&equals;"s1"><b>- No taxes&amp;comma; yes&amp;&amp;num;8230&amp;semi; but&amp;period; <&sol;b>Going abroad for retirement does not always mean no longer paying taxes in France&amp;colon; it depends on the country you decide to go to&amp;comma; if it&amp;rsquo&amp;semi;is a European Union country or not&amp;comma; if&amp;rsquo&amp;semi;there are tax treaties in the countries you're going to&amp;period; Also&amp;comma; it depends on the type of pension you&amp;rsquo&amp;semi;receive&amp;colon; "If you are an employee in the private or public sector, the conventions will not be the same," explains Anne Dayraut. "In general, when you receive a public-sector pension, you still pay your taxes in France.<&sol;span><&sol;p>&amp;NewLine;<p class&equals;"p1"><span class&equals;"s1"><b>- Choosing the right country&amp;period; <&sol;b>Portugal is one of the most popular destinations for retirees. <span class&equals;"s2">a major communications campaign<&sol;span> to make itself attractive a few years ago <span class&equals;"s2">promising foreign pensioners no taxes<&sol;span> on their retirement pensions for ten years&amp;period; Beware, however&amp;comma; "at the end of the ten tax-free years&amp;comma; retirees fall back into a classic tax system fairly equivalent to the French system"&amp;comma; warns the journalist&amp;period; But the country has&amp;rsquo&amp;semi;other assets&amp;colon; it's very close to France&amp;comma; it's pleasant to live in and&amp;rsquo&amp;semi;real estate and the cost of living aren't very expensive&amp;period;  <&sol;span><&sol;p>&amp;NewLine;<p class&equals;"p1"><span class&equals;"s1">Other countries, such as Morocco, which has signed agreements with France, or Thailand, are also popular with white hairs;<&sol;span><&sol;p>&amp;NewLine;<p class&equals;"p1"><span class&equals;"s1"><b>- Language can be a problem&amp;period; <&sol;b>The language barrier can be a real hindrance to expatriate retirees&amp;period; "In a survey carried out&amp;comma; 50&amp;percnt; of retirees who have left say that the language barrier has been a problem, and 20&amp;percnt; say that it has been too great a barrier for them"&amp;comma; points out Anne Dayraut&amp;period;<&sol;span><&sol;p>&amp;NewLine;
